Straight Talk on Smart Grid Financial Incentives
Multi-site retailers have incredible opportunities to implement and upgrade energy management systems that prepare them for the benefits of the smart grid.
In 2009, The American Recovery and Reinvestment Act provided the U.S. Department of Energy with about $4.5 billion to modernize the electric power grid. The two largest initiatives resulting from this funding are the Smart Grid Investment Grant program and the Smart Grid Demonstration program. From these funding sources, Honeywell Utility Solutions received a multi-million-dollar grant to manage the release of funds that help multi-site retailers implement or upgrade their energy management systems in preparation for the smart grid. These funds, coupled with matching grants from energy utilities such as the CPUS (California Public Utilities Commission), are resulting in opportunities for Novar (a Honeywell company) to implement fully funded ADR (automated demand response) technology on behalf of its customers. But the opportunity to take advantage of this funding and implement ADR at no cost won't last forever.
